CAL Swim Teams Finishes Strong: Eyes Postseason
CAL vs. Eastern
The Swim teams used their strong talent to overcome Easter’s depth. The teams combined to win 20 of 22 events facing an Eagles squad that more than doubled the size of CAL's. First place finishers were Austin Clark, Kendall Blomquist, Kelly Rogers, Chelsea Diamond, Taylor Ecleberry, Hannah Magnuson, Max Cain, Cole Skinker, Alex Schaper, Justin Weiss, Madison Latter & Jacob Arnold.
But beyond the dominating performance of our top swimmers, other accomplished best times and showed the future of CAL swimming is bright. Freshman Bethany Coultrap has continued to impress with her strong performances. Likewise for sixth grader Sarah Young who has potential to become a key contribute for years to come. Austin Schaper has always been a solid swimmer, but is beginning to come into his own as an eighth grader. The same can be said for his classmate Max Wilder. Jason Coultrap may only be a sixth grader, but he has potential to become an outstanding swimmer as he grows.
CAL vs. Manual & Ballard
The teams were back in action on Saturday taking on more regional rivals Manual and Ballard. Going into the meet, we knew we would need big swims going against the defending girls state champs. And over the past couple years, CAL has been right behind Manual at Regional’s and State.
Despite some great swims, the girls couldn't overcome Manual's depth, but was able to defeat Bal-lard for the second time this season. Kelly Rogers had dominating wins in the 200 and 500 Free. Hannah Magnuson was first in the 100 Back. Kendall Blomquist took 2nd in the 50 Free. Taylor Ecleberry was 3rd in the 100 Breast. The girls 400 Free Relay of Kelly Rogers, Kendall Blomquist, Chelsea Diamond and Hannah Magnuson was 2nd and the 200 Free Relay of Taylor Ecleberry, Bethany Coultrap, Kirsten Joss and Kendall Blomquist was 3rd.
The boys started the meet with a big win in the Medley Relay by Madison Latter, Justin Weiss, Max Cain & Alex Schaper and never looked back in defeating Manual and Ballard. Justin Weiss set a new school record in the 100 Breast and was 2nd in the 200 IM. Cole Skinker took first in that event and added another win in the 100 Free. Alex Schaper was 2nd in the 50 Free and 1st in the 100 Back. Max Cain added strong swims in the 200 Free and 100 Fly. The boys completed the sweep of the relays by winning the 200 Free Relay (Jacob Arnold, Justin Weiss, Madison Latter, Cole Skinker) and the 400 Free Relay (Skinker, Austin Schaper, Alex Schaper, Max Cain).
Some of the swimmers will be finishing up their season on Monday in the CAL Invitational. Come out and support the teams as they enter the post-season at the Region 2 Championships on February 5th & 6th at U of L.
